Here are some lovely reading journal examples from CEP students.
Eight-page handout outlining the elements of a short story, active reading strategies, and fiction genres. Contributed by Rachid.
A fairly non-technical, accessible review of the High Line. Contains a very clear description of the project that is ideal as a model of descriptive prose for students. Contributed by Cassandra Dawn.
This works well as a first day exercise to get students thinking about their deep motivations for being educated. Of course, it can be used as reading/writing practice anytime during the semester as well. The reading is on three pages; the book jacket on one page; I’ve appended the essay prompt to page two. The source is a book of J. Krishnamurti’s lectures on education called “This Matter of Culture.”
